According to Zambia Reports, the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) says it has established that the road accident which happened last night where eight people died on the spot was caused by the driver of the Dangote truck who misjudged the distance when overtaking.
RTSA Head of Public Relations Frederick Mubanga says details on the ground show that the accident happened last night at about 25km from Kapiri Mposhi town at a place called Chinawe.
"The accident investigations have established that the driver of the Dangote truck was overspending, and tried to overtake the two vehicles in front of him but failed after seeing an oncoming vehicle on the opposite lane resulting into the truck hitting the Altezza from behind forcing it off the road," Mubanga says.
Mubanga says the truck went ahead and hit into the minibus that was in front of the Toyota Altezza. He says another accident involving a Dangote truck was recorded last night on Great North Road after Chikumbi area at around 20:30 hrs.
"This occurred when the driver of a Toyota Sprinter registration number ACT 1281 failed to maintain to his lane hence hitting into the Dangote truck registration number BCA 2931," says Mubanga. "Three people sustained serious injuries and are in critical condition with the driver being unconscious."
Mubanga says the agency is concerned with the number of road traffic accidents involving trucks in the past few months. He has assured that the Zambian agency will be engaging Dangote company concerning their deteriorating road safety record.
